Who we are
Veg Box People is part of the family of enterprises incubated and supported by the Kindling Trust. It grew from deep concerns about the impact of the current food industry on climate change and biodiversity, on our high streets, on small-scale farmers, and on the health of our communities.
We launched our organic box scheme in the summer of 2015, in partnership with the University of Manchester, and our support has grown across the city. Veg Box People connects Greater Manchester residents with some of the freshest, most local and organic produce around. Delivering to collection points (shops and community spaces across Manchester) rather than individual homes keeps the scheme really affordable (meaning more money goes back to the farmers and growers, and customers save money too), it saves on transport, and it means that customers don’t have to wait in for delivery.
We have around 20 collection points in locations across the city, ensuring that our bags are as accessible to hundreds of customers - and we are always looking for more spaces to use as collection points! Get in touch if you want to offer a space - you can do this by heading to the ‘Contact Us’ page.
“Our food system is not broken. Our food system is colonialism, patriarchy, hegemony, genocide, theft, racism, pollution, extraction, imperialism, exploitation. It’s doing exactly what it is designed to do.”
(A Growing Culture)
Our food system needs to change. We don't believe that this will happen through the current mainstream food system, which makes huge profits at the expense of small-scale growers, family farms, our high streets and the health of millions of consumers.
We are working hard to create a small but perfectly formed food supply chain. We are building a viable alternative that shares the risks and rewards and can bring affordable, healthy and sustainable food to everyone. This will include our participation in the groundbreaking new Kindling Farm that is currently in the process of being established by the Kindling Trust. It is set to be a large farm within 50 miles of Greater Manchester that will become one of our suppliers of super-local organic produce. You can read more about it on their website.
We’ve been delivering veg bags since 2015 and, while we’ve managed to build a pretty efficient system, we are always finding things we can improve. We are confident that we have something special here, and that what we do is vital to the change we need to see in our local food system. Any changes we do make are always motivated by supporting more local farmers and providing the best possible service for our customers, and we promise to communicate these in an honest and timely manner.
There are a few things we won't compromise on: your produce will always be 100% organic (with the possible exception of supporting farmers and growers in organic conversion - but we will always tell you about this); we will never include food that has been flown to the UK; and we will always ensure the farmers are paid a price that covers their true price of production. The other thing we don't compromise on is our not-for-profit ethos so you can rest assured every penny will be spent wisely. We operate an Open Book policy, so our customers can request to see our accounts at any time (as long as they have been a customer for over 6 months).
We know that the work that we’re doing is crucial to improving the lives of our farmers and growers, the health of our customers, and the overall environmental impact we have in this country. We may not always have the biggest, neatest, or cheapest produce that can be found in supermarkets (although we often do!), but we know that those things can come at a cost to everyone but the profit-makers. We want to thank you for choosing to buy from us, to support an honest and real way to make change, and to help to tackle the destructive food system we currently have - and we hope that all this good work makes your veg taste even better!
